“I’m learning to be a tree.”

People who treasure God’s Word say odd things.
We talk about trees and blood and sheep and fruit and vines and branches and light and honey and water and soil and seeds and lambs and crosses and victory.
We write emails to each other that say, “The Lord is teaching me to be a tree.”
And we understand. Because Psalm 1 is dear to us.
And O how we want to be trees and not chaff! So we seek to plant ourselves—everyday, every morning, every afternoon, every evening—by streams of water. The Word is our water. Our life-giving river.
And O how we want to yield fruit and have taut, green, shade-giving leaves! So we seek to put our roots down deep into the stream. “And he does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”—Jeremiah 17:8
And O how we want our delight to change! We want our delight to be in the law of the Lord (the Word). And so we try to
think about it
linger over it
hover
stay there
abide
meditate
and wait for it to totally bless and feed us.
To be our water.
So our delight will change. Because we all delight in something.
The tree delights in water.
The Christian must delight in God.
And we know God through Christ.
And we know Christ from the Word.
Please Lord, incline our hearts to your Word! (Psalm 119:112)
